JOB DETAIL

We are looking for someone who is passionate about history to help us operate and present a land-mark historic steam vessel to our visitors. Although marine or steam experience is desirable, but the first quality we look for is enthusiasm for the boat and for engaging with people to tell her story and help visitors have a memorable experience. We'll provide all necessary training.

The successful candidate will work 5 days per week during the main season, alternating as Boatmaster, Engineer and Purser, to prepare, present and operate a beautiful steam boat on Coniston Water. You will prioritise safety and be prepared to take responsibility. In Winter we work on vessel maintenance, for which we will train you.

You'll need to be physically able to assist passengers in case of emergency, and to hold a Maritime & Coastguard Agency medical certificate. You'll be warm and engaging with our visitors and take charge if safety requires. We do get our hands dirty at times, and a willingness to learn practical skills is necessary. You'll also need to be willing to work with heat and pressurised systems when in the engine room.

This is a fixed-term position until September 2024

Interviews will be held in person 12th /13th April

If you have any questions about this position please contact: Julian.Blatchley@nationaltrust.org.uk
What it's like to work here:This is a small, friendly and very professional team of enthusiasts. You will join a salaried team of 6 people no board the Gondola as part of a wider property team and we are supported by about 10 volunteers. We enjoy a vibrantly friendly relationship with our visitors, and enjoy our work.
What you'll be doing:You will start by qualifying as Purser, welcoming our guests and managing tickets. This will not take long, and you will then join the boat crew as Purser, but also begin your training as Boatmaster and Steam Engineer. For Boatmaster you will have to pass a Maritime & Coastguard Agency practical test, and will become a certified boatmaster. For engineering, you will have to pass an internal training course. Once you are trained, you will alternate working in these 3 positions for the season.

A typical day at the Gondola starts with polishing, cleaning, and bringing the boiler up to pressure, we then sail 3-4 scheduled sailings per day. Our Gondola sails 6-7 days per week and you'll work 5 out of the 7 days. We also sail occasional evening charters. In Winter, you'll assist with getting Gondola out of the water and under cover, and then with varnishing, painting and repair work ready for the next season.
Who we're looking forYou’ve a smile and a story for everyone. That’s something all our people have in common. Marine or steam experience is useful, but not essential, although you must be confident working with machinery and close to deep water. You’ll have excellent communication skills and have a passion for providing the highest levels of customer care. You may wish to start, or continue, a career in a marine role. If you’re used to selling and handling cash, that’s even better.
